A day after it became public that the quarterback job at Texas A&M is up for grabs between Kenny Hill and Kyle Allen, head coach Kevin Sumlin made it clear that holds true for more than just the quarterback spot.
"More's been made out of that," Sumlin said. "My exact words were 'All jobs were open'. People just chose to pick on that one. Exactly what I said was after two weeks ago was there was nothing off the table and the question was about quarterbacks and I said 'Yeah quarterbacks too.'"
Sumlin clarified his comments during the SEC conference call Wednesday, a day after meeting with the media in College Station.
The Aggies (5-3) host Louisiana-Monroe Saturday at Kyle Field riding a three-game losing streak. Hill, who is listed as No. 1 on the depth chart, shined as the Aggies rolled to a 5-0 start. But he's struggled in the losses to Mississippi State, Mississippi and Alabama, throwing as many interceptions (six) as touchdown passes. Allen, a true freshman, has played in just one of the last four games for the Aggies but has gotten practice time with the first team as Aggies have had a week off following the 59-0 loss to Alabama.
Sumlin said the Aggies haven't focused on the quarterback position as they attempt to get bowl eligible.
"There have been many other positions that were in questions that were up for grabs last week and as we moved into preparation I think I said at the press conference yesterday, Tuesday, that we had guys that played well last week and took advantage of the opportunity and some guys didn't play very well that wanted an opportunity," Sumlin said. "As we get into game preparation, how they handle that, the game plan, is going to dictate who plays. It wasn't just about the quarterback. It was about every other job. More people have focused on that and it's just the nature of the position."
