Terrell Owens ready to retire if not signed this season

It looks as if Terrell Owens is ready to hit retirement ... finally.

Wait, he's not already retired?

Despite not playing a single down in the NFL since his time with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2010, Owens told CBSSports.com this week that, if he does not sign with a team this season, he's going to hang it up.

"If I play this year, that'd be awesome," Owens said. "If I don't play this year, I'm retiring."

The six-time Pro Bowler at least has his bowling career to fall back on if he can't find a helmet to wear by the fall.

Owens is ranked second all-time in receiving yards and third all-time in touchdowns.  He played with the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, Buffalo Bills and Bengals during his 16-year career.

Owens tried to find a team over the last three years to take his services to, but no doors have been opened.  He still has a desire to play, but at 39, it looks like he is finally coming to grips with reality.

"That's just me being realistic," Owens said. "I want to play again. I want to go out on top with a team. I think I can still play, but if I don't sign with a team, it would be time to retire.

"I have to be honest with myself."
