Sun Devils ousted as TCU claims regional
FORT WORTH, Texas -- Brian Howard pitched eight strong innings, Cam Warner drove in three runs and TCU beat Arizona State 8-1 on Sunday night to win an NCAA regional at home for the third year in a row.
Howard (8-2) struck out nine with no walks and retired the last 17 batters he faced after David Greer's RBI single in the third inning.
The Horned Frogs (45-15) will play in an NCAA Super Regional for the sixth time in eight years. TCU went to the College World Series the past two seasons.
Warner had an RBI double when TCU went ahead to stay with three runs in the second off Eder Erives (6-2). Warner's two-run homer, his fifth of the season and second in the Fort Worth Regional, came in a four-run eighth.
Arizona State (36-23) avoided elimination earlier Sunday with a 6-3 win over Gonzaga. Colby Woodmansee had a tiebreaking double in the fourth inning and Zach Dixon struck out nine in eight solid innings.
Brian Serven scored the tying run on the second wild pitch of the fourth inning from Hunter Wells (3-4). Woodmansee's hit brought home Andrew Shaps, and Tyler Williams also scored on second baseman Justin Jacobs' throwing error.
Dixon (2-1) gave up six hits and three runs with three walks. Arizona State's Jeremy McCuin had a leadoff homer in a two-run ninth after Gonzaga (36-21) pulled within a run by scoring twice in the eighth.
