Stauskas, Walton earn Big Ten awards
When you beat three top-10 teams in a week, people tend to take notice.
Not only was Michigan's Nik Stauskas named the Big Ten's Player of the Week for the second week in a row, point guard Derrick Walton Jr. made it a clean sweep by winning the Freshman of the Week award.
Stauskas had 26 points, five rebounds and five assists in the Jan. 22 home win over No. 10 Iowa, then added 19 points and four assists as Michigan beat No. 3 Michigan State Saturday at the Breslin Center.
Walton missed most of the Iowa game with flu-like symptoms, but came back against the Spartans with the best game of his young career. He finished with 19 points, six rebounds and four assists, hit the game-tying 3-pointer and then hit 8-of-9 free throws down the stretch to ice the game.
Stauskas had never won the conference Player of the Week award before winning it the last two weeks. Walton was also a first-time winner, although teammate Zak Irvin has won Freshman of the Week twice this season.
