State high school softball title game ends in utterly bizarre fashion

Losing a state championship on a walk-off home run would hurt.

An inside-the-park home run probably would make it hurt even worse.

But an inside-the-park, walk-off "home run" -- on a strikeout where the catcher drops the ball? That'll give you bad dreams for years.

Sound impossible? Well, that is what happened Friday in Great Falls, Mont. And while the play wasn't technically a home run, it had the same impact and, even better, is sure to live on Internet infamy.

Billings West won the Montana state championship 3-2 after Kendyl Boltz struck out swinging in the seventh inning, but headed for first when the Big Sky catcher dropped the ball. Her throw to first went wild too and Boltz kept rounding the bases. Two more errant throws and Boltz was crossing home plate for the winning run.

You can watch the play below:

To be fair, the play actually makes sense when you consider what Billings West went through to even make the title game.

After losing to the Big Sky 1-0 on Thursday, the Golden Bears were relegated to the loser's bracket of the double elimination tournament on Friday.

All they did was win four straight games -- in one day mind you -- to reach the title game rematch against Big Sky.

The rest, as they say, is history. Or if you are Big Sky, the stuff of nightmares.
