State funeral off for cricketer Phil Hughes
SYDNEY (AP) A state funeral for cricket star Phil Hughes has been called off after consultation with his family.
Hughes died Nov. 27, two days after he was hit by a ball during a match at Sydney Cricket Ground. He was 25.
More than 5,000 people, including Australia teammates and players from around the world, attended a funeral in his hometown of Macksville, New South Wales, last Wednesday.
New South Wales planned a state funeral to honor Hughes' contribution to cricket in his home state. But state Premier Mike Baird said Monday such plans were abandoned after discussions with his family and cricket authorities.
Baird said that because of the ''enormous outpouring of support'' at Wednesday's funeral there was no need for a state memorial service.
