Stars win 2-1 after late Caps goal waived off

Two teams sporting four-game winning streaks met on Thursday night at the American Airlines Center. But once the smoke cleared, it was the Dallas Stars who emerged victorious with a 2-1 win over Washington, the team with the best record in the NHL heading into tonight.

Dallas got goals from Mike Ribeiro in the second and from Brandon Segal in the final frame, just 20 seconds after the Capitals tied the game at 1-1 when Mike Knuble scored on the power play about halfway through the third.

But the story of the game might have been an apparent game-tying goal by Washington defenseman John Carlson with 7.6 seconds left that was waived off. The referee declared a no goal since Caps star Alex Ovechkin was ruled to be inside the crease.
