Stanford tops women's basketball coaches poll

Stanford received all nine possible first-place votes in the Pac-10 women's basketball preseason coaches poll.

UCLA was picked second and had the remaining first-place vote (coaches cannot vote for their own teams). Arizona State wsa picked to finish fifth, and Arizona seventh.

Stanford is the 10-time defending Pac-10 regular-season champion and coming off a third consecutive trip to the NCAA Final Four, reaching the national title game for the second time in three years. Head coach Tara VanDerveer, entering her 25th season at Stanford, returns 11 letterwinners, including All-American and 2010 Pac-10 Player of the Year Nnemkadi Ogwumike, a junior forward; and two other All-Pac-10 performers, senior forward Kayla Pedersen of Fountain Hills and senior guard Jeanette Pohlen.

UCLA coach Nikki Caldwell, the 2010 Pac-10 Coach of the Year, welcomes back nine letterwinners and a pair of all-conference players in junior forward Jasmine Dixon and senior guard Dorenna Campbell.

Rounding out the top half of the poll are USC, California and ASU. The Sun Devils look to rebound with help from 2009 All-Pac-10 honoree Dymond Simon of Phoenix, who missed last season after knnee surgery.

Arizona is led by all-conference returneed Ify Ibekwe and Davellyn Whyte, last season's Freshman of the Year.
