Victor Bartley got the home team on the board early with a goal mid-way through the first period, but the Minnesota Wild fell 4-1 to the Colorado Avalanche.
Center Eric Staal's had a minus-2 rating in his first game since joining the Wild as a free agent over the summer, but won a team-high 12 faceoffs.
Bartley signed with the Wild as a free agent in July and beat Avalanche goalie Jeremy Smith to put Minnesota up 1-0 early, before Colorado scored four unanswered goals in the second and third periods.
