PALLEKELE, Sri Lanka (AP) Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc dismissed Kusal Mendis for 176 during a rain-shortened morning session on Friday as Sri Lanka reached 314-7 at lunch on the fourth day of the first test.
The start of the day's play was delayed for an hour because of a wet outfield at Pallekele International Stadium, and after only 45 deliveries, the return of rain curtailed the session.
It was time enough for Australia to take the key wicket of Mendis when Starc (3-62) had him caught behind by Peter Nevill. Mendis batted for more than five hours and hit 21 fours and a six.
Dilruwan Perera (12) and Rangana Herath 917) were the unbeaten batsmen for Sri Lanka, which has a 228-run lead with three wickets in hand.
