The South Carolina-Arkansas matchup got out of hand in Fayetteville, Ark., on Saturday, with the Gamecocks running up a 52-7 score to beat the Razorbacks, which must have felt great for the offensive-minded Steve Spurrier. Even worse: it was Arkansas' homecoming game.
Spurrier's 14th-ranked team ran up 537 yards (277 yards on the ground) and earned 32 first downs in the blowout. The Razorbacks, on the other hand, ran just 37 offensive PLAYS, committing three turnovers and gaining just 248 yards.
In his postgame press conference — always a media favorite event — Spurrier left new Arkansas coach Bret Bielema a bit of a dig:
Keep in mind, it was Bielema, who is now 3-4 in his inaugural season in Fayetteville, who took to SEC Media Days a few months ago arguing against the uptempo, no-huddle offenses. That speech to the media drew this response from Spurrier when the two crossed paths at the event:
Earlier in the week, Bielema stated he was looking forward to coaching against Spurrier. Barring an SEC title game meeting next season (go ahead and count it out this year), he won't get another opportunity for a while. Judging by Saturday's score and the postgame dig, maybe that's for the best.
