DURBAN, South Africa (AP) The first test between South Africa and New Zealand was abandoned without a ball being bowled on Tuesday.

A heavy downpour on Saturday had left the outfield of the Kingsmead ground sodden and unplayable on days three and four, and with little prospect of play on the final day the umpires agreed to call the game off.

South Africa was bowled out for a modest 263 but had reduced to New Zealand to 15-2 in reply before the weather ended the contest.

The second and final test starts at Centurion on Saturday.
