Shields blows 5-run lead as Padres lose to Braves, 6-5
ATLANTA (AP) -- It was difficult to see the sixth-inning collapse coming for James Shields -- especially on the road.
Shields blew a five-run lead and a chance for his eighth straight win, and Joaquin Benoit gave up the go-ahead homer to pinch-hitter Joey Terdoslavich as the San Diego Padres lost to the Atlanta Braves 6-5 on Tuesday night.
Since the start of 2013, Shields is 24-5 on the road for an .823 winning percentage that is the best in the majors.
This time, he lost his way and lost the big lead.
Shields allowed seven hits and five runs, four earned, in 5 1-3 innings.
"I didn't get the job done, basically," said Shields, still undefeated at 7-0 with a 3.79 ERA. "I didn't get my job done tonight. I've got to get better."
Padres manager Bud Black defended Shields.
"His stuff was still good; they found holes," Black said.
Will Venable drove in two runs for the Padres with three hits, including his fifth homer.
Terdoslavich, pinch-hitting in only his fourth at-bat of the season, drove a pitch from Benoit (4-3) over the fence in right-center for his first career homer.
Jim Johnson (2-3) pitched a scoreless eighth.
The Padres had a chance to hand Braves closer Jason Grilli his second blown save in two games. Grilli gave up a one-out double to Yonder Alonso and, with two outs, walked Cory Spangenberg after throwing a wild pitch that allowed Alonso to advance to third. Grilli struck out Clint Barmes to end the game.
Andrelton Simmons hit a three-run double in Atlanta's improbable five-run sixth. The Braves were helped by two video reviews decided in their favor.
With the bases loaded, Simmons hit a double to left. After two runs scored, Juan Uribe was called out at the plate. The call was overturned following a review.
Jonny Gomes' single brought Simmons to the plate for a collision with catcher Derek Norris on another close play. Simmons was called safe, and this time plate umpire Jerry Meals' call stood following a review of 2 minutes, 41 seconds.
Meals had another call overturned in the eighth on another play at the plate. Meals called Melvin Upton Jr. safe as he tried to score on a grounder to Uribe at third. Meals' call was overturned only 49 seconds later. The review showed he was tagged by Bethancourt before scoring.
Braves rookie Mike Foltynewicz gave up five runs on a career-high 12 hits in 5 2-3 innings. He was knocked out of the game by consecutive run-scoring doubles from Venable and Norris in the sixth.
The start of the game was delayed 50 minutes because of rain in the area.
MAKE ROOM FOR MYERS
Black said OF-1B Will Myers could join the team Wednesday but may not come off the DL immediately because the Padres may need to add a fresh arm for the bullpen. Myers has been out since May 11 with left wrist tendinitis.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Padres: Black said RHP Brandon Morrow is not expected to throw for two weeks after having a setback in his rehabilitation from right shoulder inflammation. Black said an MRI showed no "significant changes" in the shoulder. "We're probably going to have to take just a little more time to let the shoulder calm down," Black said.
Braves: Utility player Kelly Johnson could come off the 15-day disabled list Wednesday. He has been out since May 14 with a right oblique strain.
UP NEXT
Padres: RHP Tyson Ross (3-5) will try for back-to-back wins for the first time this season when he faces the Braves on Wednesday night.
Braves: For the second straight night, a Braves rookie right-hander will face the Padres for the first time in his career. Following the lead of Foltynewicz, Williams Perez (1-0) will make his fifth start and his first against San Diego.
