SDSU’s Rocky Long hints at switch at quarterback in 2017

San Diego State football has reached unforeseen heights over the course of the last two seasons, including back-to-back Mountain West championships and two consecutive bowl victories over the University of Cincinnati and the University of Houston, respectively.

However, in contrast to their consistent success, the Aztecs’ offense has been limited due to underwhelming, inconsistent play at quarterback from starter Christian Chapman.

Aztecs head coach Rocky Long hinted that Chapman’s days at the top of he depth chart could be numbered, as he said “there’s a good possibility” that the SDSU picks up a fifth-year graduate quarterback prior to the 2017 season in a press conference on Friday.

Long is unable to discuss the prospective transfer’s name until he signs with the program or steps foot on the Mesa due to NCAA regulations, but he was noticeably optimistic about a new signal caller joining the Scarlet and Black in the near future.

If added, a fifth-year graduate would likely take hold of the Aztecs’ offense under center in 2017, allowing Chapman to develop within a backup role before earning another opportunity to take the reigns as a senior in 2018.
