Reporting from Tempe, Ariz. — Two years after knee and elbow injuries conspired to end his distinguished pitching career, reliever Scot Shields was back in Angels camp Thursday as a guest instructor, trying to not act so clueless.
"I'm nervous -- I have no idea what to do," Shields said, before joking, "Maybe I'm here to get Jered Weaver on track. It's kind of strange being in this atmosphere again and seeing the guys."
Shields, who will remain with the club through Monday, was the team's most durable and dependable reliever for a solid six years (2003-2008) and was named Sports Illustrated's Set-Up Man of the Decade.
The Michigan native helped the Angels win the 2002 World Series, he finished with a 46-44 record and 3.18 earned-run average and no regrets about how his career ended.
"I haven't picked up a ball since Cleveland two years ago," said Shields, who is married with two daughters, ages 9 and 7. "I don't miss it. I retired to be with my family, and that's what I'm doing."
