Pena spent only 2013 in Detroit, where he appeared in 71 games and split duties with Alex Avila. Mad Max finished that season with a 2.90 ERA, a 21-3 record and 240 strikeouts in 214 innings pitched.

Scherzer earned $15.5 million on a one-year deal with Detroit in 2014. If he had waited until the next contract he'll secure as a free agent, Scherzer may have owed Pena more like a Mercedes.
