If you're a Vikings fan, you've probably wiped your brow already.
There's no longer a reason to sweat, nor a reason to fret.
The Vikings did what made the most sense, even though for months they tried to dupe people into thinking they wouldn't.
With the fourth overall pick of the NFL draft, the Vikings selected Southern Cal left tackle Matt Kalil.
Then they made a trade that landed Notre Dame safety Harrison Smith with the 29th overall pick.
It was a nice start to the draft. Very nice.
And Rick Spielman had a good night overseeing his first draft as the Vikings' general manager.
Taking Kalil was the right move, the smart move, the move that will help keep Christian Ponder from becoming the NFL's version of road kill.
And not only did the Vikings get Kalil, they traded the third overall pick to Cleveland for the fourth pick and also fourth-, fifth- and seventh-round picks.
Just getting Kalil would have made the first round a success. But then the Vikings added Smith, who will become a starter as well as a leader on the Vikings' defense.
Upon reflection, it was wrong to say the Vikings had a nice start to the draft, and that Spielman had a good night.
In reality, the Vikings had a great start and Spielman had a great night.
