The San Diego Padres cruised to a 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels after hitting two bombs early in the contest.

Padres’ Hector Sanchez put San Diego up early, sending an 0-1 pitch into the crowd for his first home run of spring training to score Carlos Asuaje and Brett Wallace in the top of the 1st inning.

Sanchez had just one hit in 12 at bats before Friday’s game against the Angels.

Asuaje first got on base for the Padres with a hard single deflected off of Angels pitcher JC Ramirez. Brett Wallace followed Asuaje to first base on a walk following Franchy Cordero’s strikeout.

Padres pitcher Clayton Richard then helped the Angels to two runs in the bottom of the second inning, hitting both Angels’ Cameron Maybin and Jefry Marte with pitches before committing a throwing error to bring Maybin in for the score. Angels catcher Carlos Perez then batted Marte in with a single to center to close the gap to one run.

Following a quiet 3rd inning from both teams, Padres’ Jabari Blash blasted a solo home run to left center field to extend the Padres’ lead to 4-2.

Angels pitcher Manny Banuelos then tossed a perfect 5th inning before loading the bases in the 6th with three walks to Cordero, Sanchez and Blash. However, he was able to pull away without allowing a run, as he struck out Padres’ Brett Wallace and Luis Sardinas to close out the inning unscathed.

Banuelos had zero strikeouts through four innings prior to Friday’s matchup against the Padres. He picked up three strikeouts through 2 and 2/3 innings.

Both the Angels and Padres went scoreless after the fourth inning largely due to San Diego’s consistent rotation on the mound. Padres’ Ryan Buchter, Brad Hand, Jesse Torres and Christian Bethancourt all pitched shutout innings before Carlos Fisher closed the game out to secure the 4-2 win.

Angels’ Ramon Flores tried to keep his team in the hunt with double to center field in the bottom of the 9th, but Fisher ended any chance of a comeback, as he caught Sherman Johnson looking on a strikeout for the Angels’ final at bat.

With the win, the Padres are now 6-7 so far through the preseason

San Diego will travel to Maryville Baseball Park in Phoenix to take on the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday before returning to Peoria to host the Cleveland Indians on Sunday.
