Rubio sidelined by ankle sprain

The status of point guard Ricky Rubio is uncertain after he took a nasty-looking spill late in the second quarter Friday night at Orlando.

With 2:28 remaining in the first half, Rubio rolled his left ankle sideways while driving toward the basket against Willie Green. After undergoing X-rays in the locker room, it was determined Rubio has a sprained left ankle; he'll be re-evaluated Saturday.

Even if he'd been fully healthy, Rubio couldn't have returned. Green was called for a foul on the play, and Anthony Bennett came in to shoot Rubio's free throws.

By rule, a player must sit out the rest of the game if he's unable to take his own foul shots.

But Rubio likely wasn't in any position to come back, anyway. He spent the second half on the Wolves sideline in crutches as Mo Williams and Zach LaVine played in his stead.

"It just happens. That is the game, and you never know what is going to happen during a game," Minnesota center Nikola Pekovic told FOX Sports Florida's Ken Hornack, in reference to Rubio's injury. "We just can wish a fast recovery . . .

"We looked really bad after that," Pekovic added. "It was tough for us, but we still had a chance to win the game."
