Just minutes after Philadelphia 76ers guard Evan Turner sank 14 shots from behind the backboard, setting a Guinness World Record, Timberwolves guard Ricky Rubio snatched the honor away.
In Orlando for an All-Star Weekend Rising Stars shootaround Friday morning, Rubio lined up with the basket in front of him and to his right and sunk 18 shots in 60 seconds. That was four better than Turner and good for a more permanent world record, it would seem.
"Wowwww a world record!!! Hahaha," Rubio tweeted shortly after making his Guinness mark.
Most amazing about Rubio's performance was the pace. He simply stood and shot, stood and shot at a leisurely clip, barely missing and looking as if it would take hours for him to break a sweat. Leave it to Rubio -- who is known for his effortless passing -- to make breaking a record look like something decidedly less than astonishing.
Rubio, who's averaging 11.3 points and 8.4 assists per game in his rookie season, will play in the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge on Friday night. He's also talking with teammate Derrick Williams about assisting him in the Slam Dunk Contest on Saturday, though neither has confirmed Rubio's participation.
