KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A source close to the situation confirmed that the Royals on Wednesday agreed to a two-year deal worth $20 million with right-hander Edinson Volquez.

CBSSports.com first reported the agreement.

Volquez will be in Kansas City later this week for a physical.

Volquez, 31, was 13-7 with a 3.04 ERA last season for the Pirates. He logged 192 2/3 innings, by far his best season since 2008, when he was 17-6 with a 3.21 ERA for the Reds.

The Royals will be Volquez's sixth organization.

The Royals now appear to have completed their offseason shopping needs.

On Tuesday, the Royals introduced their new designated hitter, switch-hitter Kendrys Morales. The Royals also have signed right fielder Alex Rios to a one-year, $11 million deal, pending a physical.

Volquez will replace free agent James Shields and join Yordano Ventura, Danny Duffy, Jeremy Guthrie and Jason Vargas in the rotation.

Kansas City had shown interest in free-agent pitcher Jake Peavy as well.
