Report: Teen dies after breaking neck
A teenager has died after breaking his neck in a freak fall while riding on a BMX track in a small town in New Zealand's north, The Northern Advocate reported Wednesday.
Dion Felton, 15, fell at a competitive BMX track on the outskirts of Whangarei, about 100 miles (160km) north of Auckland, late last month.
He had been on life support since the fall, but died on Saturday after undergoing surgery.
Whangarei BMX Club president Stuart Bell said the club was in shock over the death and members' thoughts were with the young man's family.
He said deaths on BMX tracks were rare and it was common to have them open for the public to use at their discretion.
The Whangarei track, which hosted the national championships in 2009, was designed and built by American BMX expert Tom Ritzenthaler, who created the Olympic track in Beijing, The Northern Advocate reported.
