Report: Sam Hurd smoked and sold pot to 20-25 of his Dallas Cowboys teammates
IRVING — It's possible that former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Sam Hurd will spend the rest of his life in prison.
A federal judge will make that call tomorrow, sentencing him from between 10 years to life without parole for drug trafficking charges.
Hurd pleaded guilty in April. And in a Sports Illustrated story published today, Hurd said he smoked and sold marijuana to 20 to 25 of his Cowboys teammates while with the team from 2006 to 2010.
"I don't have any comments on that just because I don't know anything about that," Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said Tuesday. Garrett was Dallas' offensive coordinator from 2007 to when he was promoted to his current position in 2011.
Hurd said in the story that "at least half" of all NFL players, by his "conservative estimate," smoke marijuana. Hurd said he began smoking while rehabbing after ankle surgery in 2008.
"He wasn't making any money off players—I know that," a Cowboys teammate, who spoke under condition of anonymity, said in the story.
Cowboys defensive tackle Jason Hatcher, who was teammates with Hurd during all five of those seasons, said he had no idea that "any of this was going on with him."
"He always been a great guy in the locker room, a great teammate," Hatcher said. "It is very shocking to hear. But as far as like everybody smoking in the NFL, I don't know. Whatever you do off the field is your business. I don't really know what to say about that situation."
Hatcher added: "You don't want to see that happen to a guy like that. I had a lot of respect for him as a man. He never came on to me as a bad person. I never knew nothing like this was going on behind the scenes. I wish the best for him.
"At the end of the day, you got to have a soft place in your heart for a guy like that with family, kids. It's possible he could go to prison without knowing his daughter or whatever. Sad situation. But I wish the best for him and I will continue to pray for him."
