It appears Vad Lee is transferring after one season as Georgia Tech's starting quarterback, citing the triple-option offense as a reason.
The redshirt sophomore's intentions were first reported by Rivals website Jacketsonline.com.
The 6-foot-1, 215-pounder played in all 13 games this season, throwing for 1,561 yards, 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions and he ran for 513 yards and eight scores. He was 5 of 17 for 147 yards with one TD and one INT and ran for 24 yards on 16 carries in the Yellow Jackets' 25-17 loss to Ole Miss in the Music City Bowl.
ESPN's Joe Schad quoted Lee as saying "the triple option was never really my thing."
Lee, a Durham, N.C. native and the state's Associated Press Player of the Year in 2010, ran for 544 yards and nine TDs as a redshirt freshman and beat out Justin Thomas last spring for the starting job.
Now, the Jackets will turn to Thomas, a freshman who had 131 yards on 17 pass attempts, and sophomore Tim Byerly (four attempts) to try to fill the void Lee is leaving behind.
Lee will have to sit out next season should he transfer to another FBS school and -- having already burned his redshirt year -- he would lose a year of eligibility without an NCAA exemption. If he were to go to an FBS team, he could play immediately.
