GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Brett Favre was fortunate to avoid the destructive path of a tornado Sunday in his hometown of Hattiesburg, Miss.
The three-time NFL MVP quarterback who still lives in the Hattiesburg area was nearby when major damage was caused by a twister that left thousands without power.
According to USA Today, Favre had just returned home from the University of Southern Mississippi, where his 13-year-old daughter Breleigh was practicing volleyball, when the tornado touched down. Both Favres steered clear, but the tornado did major damage at the university where Favre once played college football.
"Where the tornado started, as the crow flies, was probably a half-mile to one mile straight east of my property,'' Favre told USA Today. "Then it just (veered) and crossed the main highway in Hattiesburg before heading to Southern Miss. You never hear of a college getting hit with a true tornado. The good Lord's looking out (because) the students were gone for Mardi Gras break.
"It's kind of one of those things down here. I don't want to say we overlook it but there are tornado warnings and bad weather all the time. To say that it was black and windy — that could be any day. At times, you just take it for granted.''
Favre told USA Today that he will donate time and money to help rebuild some of the areas hardest hit.
