Report: DNA test links Jameis Winston to alleged victim
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- DNA analysis by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement matches the sample taken from the accuser's underwear to a sample that Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston provided to law enforcement officials, according to a report by ESPN.com.
Police took a sexual assault kit on Dec. 7, 2012, when the alleged sexual assault occurred and Winston offered up a swab recently, the report said.
The DNA match leaves no doubt that Winston and the accuser had been together. But it also doesn't by itself mean that Winston sexually assaulted the accuser, who the Tampa Bay Times reported on Wednesday is a Florida State student and is from the Tampa area.
Tallahassee Police Department interim chief Tom Coe said Wednesday night in a statement that the accuser had stopped cooperating with police in February. But the family of the accuser disputed that claim earlier on Wednesday. A lawyer for the family called it a "questionable investigation" and said that a TPD detective warned the accuser that her life could be "made miserable" if she pursued charges in a "football town."
Winston has not been arrested or charged but he was originally linked to the case by TMZ and the Times on Nov. 13.
A redshirt freshman, Winston has been one of the top quarterbacks in college football this season. He has thrown for 2,938 yards and 28 touchdowns, leading No. 2 Florida State to a 10-0 start going into Saturday's game at home against Idaho (1-9).
