Report: Cornerback Bush returns to Packers
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Green Bay Packers on Tuesday made their first free-agent move of the offseason, reportedly agreeing to bring back cornerback and special teams gunner Jarrett Bush.
Bush's new deal with Green Bay is for three years, according to Aaron Wilson of Scout.com. Financial terms of the contract are not yet known.
Prior to re-signing with the Packers, Bush reportedly visited the New York Jets and Arizona Cardinals.
Bush went undrafted in 2006 and joined Green Bay later that year after being released by the Carolina Panthers in preseason.
Last season, Bush, who will turn 28 in May, primarily played in dime situations on defense as the fourth cornerback. Then, in the Packers' playoff loss to the New York Giants, Bush was in on first and second downs as the nickel back. Due to Bush's strong tackling ability, coach Mike McCarthy preferred him to Sam Shields.
It is likely that Bush will return to his previous role as the dime cornerback in 2012 while specializing in downfield tackles on punts, an area in which he is one of the league's best. However, Shields' play took a step back in 2011 after a very promising rookie year, which could open the door for Bush to get more playing time on defense like he did in Green Bay's playoff game.
Saturday visit: GM Ted Thompson may be breaking from his draft-and-develop method to find a replacement for departed free-agent center Scott Wells, who signed with the St. Louis Rams.
Multiple reports have confirmed that five-time Pro Bowl center Jeff Saturday visited the Packers this week. Saturday, who will turn 37 before next season, has spent his entire 13-year career with the Indianapolis Colts. Despite his age, Saturday has played in all 16 games in six of the past eight seasons.
However, because of Saturday's long history with the Colts, it is possible he will follow Peyton Manning to the Denver Broncos. Saturday reportedly is visiting the Broncos on Tuesday and may prefer to continue snapping the ball to Manning rather than signing with the Packers.
Pass rusher snapped up: Another premier pass rusher is now off the free-agent market as former Raider Kamerion Wimbley has signed a five-year deal with the Tennessee Titans. The Packers showed interest in Wimbley after he was released by Oakland on Friday. However, with Wimbley reportedly receiving $13.5 million guaranteed from the Titans, he probably was out of Green Bay's price range.
