Report: Chandler Jones could void NFL contract with fight vs. Jon
As you may remember, New England Patriots defensive end Chandler Jones said shortly after winning the Super Bowl that he wants to fight his brother and UFC champ Jon Jones in a one-round match which would benefit charity. You know, because a football player with no fight experience could totally beat up one of the best fighters of all time.
In any case, Chandler seems sure he could use his superior size to take down "Bones," and seems intent on making the exhibition happen. His team, however, doesn't seem so excited about the prospect of their star pass rusher getting beat up by his fighter brother just for kicks, or charity.
According to a report by TMZ (the outlet which first reported the news of Chandler's idea for the fight), the Patriots can't stop Chandler from fighting Jon, but if the three-year veteran steps into the ring, the club could find him in violation of his contract. The team's VP of Media Relations told TMZ:
"It's not a matter of if we'd allow Chandler to fight his brother. We can't stop the players from doing what they want. But he might be voiding his contract obligations to the team if he went out and did it."
Fortunately for the Patriots, the club doesn't think Chandler, who at 6-feet-5 is an inch taller than Jon and also outweighs his brother by more than 50 pounds, is really all that serious.
"I think they're having fun, but do I think fighting is something they're actually serious about? No," the exec said. "They're brothers. They have a sibling rivalry. Take the Gronkowski brothers ... there's not a Gronk among them that would say Rob's better at anything."
