Redskins' Meriweather fined $42,000 for hit on Eddie Lacy

GREEN BAY, Wis. — The helmet-to-helmet hit that gave Green Bay Packers rookie running back Eddie Lacy a concussion on his first carry at Lambeau Field has resulted in a big fine for Washington Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather.

According to a league source, the NFL has fined Meriweather $42,000 for the hit on Lacy.
However, later in the Week 2 game, when Meriweather lowered his head on a hit and effectively gave himself a concussion when tackling Packers running back James Starks, that was deemed to be legal by the NFL.
Lacy has not yet been medically cleared by Green Bay's training staff and could miss Sunday's Week 3 matchup on the road against the Cincinnati Bengals.
"Eddie Lacy is making progress," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Wednesday. "He seems to be doing fine. He's going through the protocol, so we'll take another step tomorrow.
"He looks good. He's in the meetings, and that's always a positive sign, but he's got a couple more tests in front of him that he has to pass before he'll be able to practice."
Meriweather's hit on Lacy was not flagged for a penalty during the game.
"What happens in the game, particularly the one this past Sunday as far as officiating, I have no comment on," McCarthy said. "There's a procedure and opportunity to communicate with the league office. That's always an option for us as a club as far as what's called and not called. That's why they have the system in place to go back and look at games and make sure they got it right.
"There's league discipline and there's officiating. Sometimes you get the calls, sometimes you don't."
