Reds place Schumaker on DL with concussion, recall Lutz
CINCINNATI -- Add Skip Schumaker to the Reds' list of injured players.
The Reds placed the utility player on the seven-day concussion disabled list prior to Friday night's game against Pittsburgh at Great American Ball Park. Outfielder Donald Lutz was recalled from Triple-A Louisville to take Schumaker's place.
The Reds earlier on Friday placed second baseman Brandon Phillips on the DL following surgery to repair a torn left thumb tendon.
Schumaker was on the DL at the start of the season and missed the first month because of a dislocated shoulder. He was one of eight Reds to begin the season on the DL.
Schumaker was injured when he ran face-first into the padded wall in right field Thursday in an attempt to catch a ball hit by Chicago Cubs third baseman Luis Valbuena in the 12th inning. Schumaker couldn't come up with the catch and was slow to get up but eventually recovered in time to retrieve the ball and throw it back to the infield. Valbuena's hit went for a two-run triple that provided the deciding margin in a 6-4 Chicago win but he was thrown out at home attempting to complete an inside-the-park home run.
Schumaker is hitting .240 in 47 games this season for the Reds while playing four different positions (right field, left field, center field and second base). He is hitting .315 in his last 16 games, and the Reds are 23-11 in his 34 starts.
This is the second call-up of the season for Lutz. He appeared in seven games between May 23 and June 9 while Joey Votto was on the disabled list. He had just two hits in 15 plate appearances with a pair of walks but had four home runs, five doubles and 20 RBI with Louisville in 32 games.
