CINCINNATI -- Reds shortstop Zack Cozart was hit in the head with a pitch by Los Angeles Dodgers starter Josh Beckett in the fifth inning of Tuesday night's game at Great American Ball Park but was able to get up and remain in the game.
The Reds were trailing 4-0 with two outs in the bottom of the fifth when Beckett's pitch to the right-handed batting Cozart got away from him. The ball appeared to hit Cozart around the ear flap. He initially turned face down on the ground as Reds medical personnel and manager Bryan Price came out to attend to him. He was able to sit up and then eventually got the clearance to stay in the game.
Cozart was stranded on first base when pitcher Mike Leake lined out to Los Angeles left fielder Matt Kemp to end the inning.
Cozart took his position in the top of the sixth inning.
