GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) -- Aaron Heilman's last attempt to make Arizona's rotation went poorly all around.
Brandon Phillips hit a three-run homer and the Cincinnati Reds roughed up Heilman to beat the Diamondbacks 9-6 on Sunday.
Heilman, competing with Armando Galarraga for the final spot in the Arizona rotation, allowed eight runs and eight hits in two innings. Phillips' homer was his first of spring training.
The Diamondbacks committed four errors that contributed to the rough time.
"He didn't locate (pitches) very well," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said. "He didn't keep the ball down. He was pitching behind in the count, and four errors made it a pretty tough go."
Chris Heisey hit his team-high fifth homer of the spring off Arizona's Rafael Rodriguez. Heisey made 42 starts in the outfield as a rookie last season.
"Heisey is going to come up big before it's over," manager Dusty Baker said. "There aren't too many people like Heisey who can play all three outfield positions -- play them well and hit and run."
Reds third baseman Scott Rolen returned after missing two games with a bruised left elbow and hit a two-run double. Catcher Ramon Hernandez, sidelined the last week with a sore throwing elbow, tossed out Ryan Roberts trying to steal.
"We have to watch Ramon more that Scotty, but he threw the ball great," Baker said.
Stephen Drew had two hits for Arizona. The shortstop has missed time with sore abdominal muscles.
"This week went as planned for him," Gibson said. "He was out for some time. I don't want him to out there all nine innings yet."
Gibson is pleased with the Diamondbacks' progress despite their sloppiness in the last two games.
"We have the ability to get better," Gibson said. "A lot of people doubt us, but I'm not one of them. At times we've done very well. The last week of camp is tough. I've been through it. Everyone is ready for the season to start. We have to keep getting better and better and more consistent."
NOTES: Cincinnati reassigned LHP Dontrelle Willis and OF Jeremy Hermida to the minor league camp. Hermida is exploring his options with other major league teams. Willis will report to Triple-A Louisville. ... Reds OF Fred Lewis was examined by the medical staff. He had pain in his side following a game on Saturday. ... Arizona closer J.J. Putz was slotted into a minor league game on Sunday. He was scratched from an appearance last week with stiffness in his back. ... Ryan Roberts is hitting .500 this spring. "He's been great," Gibson said. "I like the way he and Willie Bloomquist go about their business. I'd like to see our team be more like that with great grit and determination."
