Texas Rangers left-hander Michael Kirkman, who has struggled throughout the season, has been put on the 15-day disabled list because of a recurrence of a cutaneous lymphoma on his right triceps.
Kirkman is expected to begin treatment soon and will be able to participate in baseball activities. He's expected to recover soon, but there's no time line for a return.
Kirkman was diagnosed with skin cancer in January during an examination in Florida. He continued to play while receiving treatment.
He has struggled this season, going 0-2 with an 8.18 ERA in 25 appearances. His ERA is the highest among qualifying relievers in the American League.
To take Kirkman's roster spot, the Rangers have purchased the contract of veteran right-hander Kyle McClellan.
The Rangers made another DL move Sunday. Starter Alexi Ogando, who already has had one stint on the disabled list, is on it again because of inflammation in his right shoulder. The Rangers have called up right-hander Josh Lindblom to take his roster spot. Lindblom could start Monday against Cleveland.
Ogando missed a little more than two weeks with biceps tendinitis. He returned from the DL on Wednesday and started that night against Boston.
McClellan, who came to camp this spring as a non-roster invitee, was 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA in six appearances with Triple-A Round Rock. The former St. Louis Cardinals starter and reliever missed most of the 2012 season after battling shoulder problems. He had surgery for a frayed labrum last summer.
He was slowed this spring by a strained lat muscle and opened the season on the disabled list.
To make room for McClellan on the 40-man roster, the Rangers moved right-hander Joakim Soria to the 60-day disabled list.
Lindblom was scratched from his Triple-A start Saturday night. He has made one start for the Rangers, losing May 20 against Oakland. He was acquired from Philadelphia in the offseason as part of the Michael Young trade.
