Reading between the fantasy baseball headlines

Reading between the fantasy baseball headlines

Some noteworthy fantasy baseball production on Thursday afternoon - the fourth day of the regular baseball season.  However, sometimes it's easy for fantasy owners to get caught up in the heroes of the day, that you overlook the minutiae of the moment that lives between the headlines.

Here are a handful of examples of what I mean:

Mets – 6 vs. Nationals – 3

Headline: Harvey solid in return, Strasburg roughed up in first start of 2015

Between the Headlines: Mets’ catcher Travis d’Arnaud now has five hits in three games with four ribbies.  With catchers at a premium in deeper leagues, owners should take note of his early production. The prospect was part of two pretty big trades that sent Roy Halladay to the Phillies and R.A. Dickey to the Blue Jays.  Available in 33 percent of leagues.

Rangers – 10 vs. Athletics – 1

Headline: Graveman rocked for seven earned runs in less than four innings

Between the Headlines: one of the best pitchers coming out of spring training (3-1 w/ 0.36 ERA in 25 IP) and another reminder (when convenient), spring production does come flavored with grains of salt.  Just remember, despite the fast track to the big leagues and a big part of the Josh Donaldson deal, Graveman started the 2014 season at Single A.

Indians 5 vs. Astros – 1

Headline: Indians come two outs shy of four-pitcher no-hitter

Between the Headlines: Dr. Jekyll and Trevor Bauer needed 111 pitches to get through six innings with 11 strikeouts (good) and five walks (bad).  By banging out 11 hits vs. Houston’s SP3, the Tribe’s team batting average is up to .214.

Pirates – 2 vs. Reds – 3

Headline: Votto’s clutch hitting in back-to-back games help Reds sweep Pirates

Between the Headlines: Billy Hamilton is hitting .333 with .429 OBP early on, which means – oh yeah – he already has six stolen bases.  #FreeBillyBurns #FreeMicahJohnson #StolenBaseRace

Toronto Blue Jays Depth Chart News

Headline: Brett Cecil temporarily removed as closer

Between the Lines: Reporters believe Miguel Castro will see most opportunities in short-term, but he’s a SP-only on FOX Sports currently.  He should earn RP eligibility soon.
