Infielder Jayson Nix signed a minor-league contract with the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday that includes an invitation to spring training.
Nix, 31, has played parts of six seasons in the major leagues, with the Colorado Rockies, Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees. Last year, he appeared in 87 games with the Yankees and hit .236 with three home runs and 24 RBI. He was a versatile presence in the infield during that time, serving at shortstop (48 games), third base (41) and second base (four).
Nix, in 425 career games, has hit .218 with 37 home runs. He made $900,000 with the Yankees last season.
In addition to Nixâs signing, the Rays announced that outfielder Jerry Sands will receive an invitation to spring training, which begins when pitchers and catchers report Feb. 14 in Port Charlotte, Fla. Sands, outrighted to Triple-A Durham, had been designated for assignment Tuesday.
