Rays righty Alex Cobb named AL player of the week

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Alex Cobb was named the American League player of the week for the period ending Sept. 22, MLB announced Monday.

Cobb, 25, was 2-0 with a 1.65 ERA in starts at Tropicana Field against the Texas Rangers on Sept. 16 and Baltimore Orioles on Sept. 21. He allowed two runs and six hits with 10 strikeouts in eight innings against the Rangers, and he gave up one run and five hits with 12 strikeouts in 8 1/3 innings against the Orioles.

The third-year player is 10-3 with a 2.90 ERA and 130 strikeouts in 21 starts this season. He missed two months after being struck on the right ear with a line drive against the Kansas City Royals on June 15 at Tropicana Field, and he has gone 4-1 with a 2.73 ERA and 54 strikeouts over eight starts since returning.

Other nominees included Royals right-hander James Shields, Houston Astros infielder/outfielder Chris Carter, Minnesota Twins infielder Brian Dozier, Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez and New York Yankees right-hander Ivan Nova.
