Rays place John Jaso on disabled list, tab Steve Geltz as starter for Friday

The Tampa Bay Rays placed designated hitter John Jaso on the disabled list Thursday and recalled outfielder Mikie Mahtook from Triple-A Durham.
The Rays also announced that right-hander Steve Geltz, who has no previous starts in 15 major-league appearances, will take the mound Friday in the series opener against the Miami Marlins. Previously, Tampa Bay's starter for that day had been undetermined.
Jaso, 31, suffered a left wrist contusion in a loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Monday at Tropicana Field when sliding headfirst into second base. He didn't play the final two games of the series, and he was considered day-to-day before Thursday.
Mahtook, 25, has no previous major-league stats. The 31st overall pick in the 2011 draft, he's a career .274 hitter with 28 home runs and 198 RBI in 396 minor-league games. He hit .292 with 12 home runs and 68 RBI with Durham last year.
Meanwhile, Geltz is 0-1 with a 2.84 ERA in 15 major-league appearances in parts of three seasons since 2012. He posted a 3.24 ERA in 8 1/3 innings with the Rays last year. He has allowed no hits and one walk with four strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings of work with Tampa Bay this season.
Right-handers Chris Archer (Saturday) and Nathan Karns (Sunday) will start the second and third games against Miami this weekend.
