Rays, Orioles combine for most pitchers used in MLB history
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The six-hour, 54-minute marathon between the Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles on Friday produced some major league history.
For the first time, a combined 21 pitchers were used in the Rays’ 5-4 victory in 18 innings, which was the longest game in both teams’ history. The Rays used 11 and the Orioles 10, surpassing the previous record of 20 set twice before, most recently Aug. 24 in the Arizona Diamondbacks’ 12-7 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies also in 18 innings.
