ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Rays regret that an insensitive sign found its way in Tropicana Field on Wednesday.
"Last night Rays mascot Raymond was handed an inappropriate sign brought to the game by a fan,” the Rays said in a release. “Fans are welcome to bring signs into Tropicana Field provided they are not offensive. The Tampa Bay Rays regret that this particular sign was displayed in the ballpark, and we apologize for the lapse in judgment."
On Thursday morning, Deadspin published a post showing the Rays’ mascot, Raymond, holding a sign from a fan in the stands along the first-base foul line during a victory over the Baltimore Orioles that read, “Rays To Do List … 2. World Series.”
A stingray killed Irwin, a Australian television personality known as “The Crocodile Hunter,” when he was filming off the Great Barrier Reef in September 2006. He was 44.
