Rays acquire 1B/OF Marc Krauss from Angels, option Nick Franklin to Triple-A

The Tampa Bay Rays acquired first baseman/outfielder Marc Krauss from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for minor-leave right-handet Kyle Winkler on Thursday. In addition, the Rays sent infielder Nick Franklin to Triple-A Durham.

Krauss, 27, spent parts of three seasons in the majors with the Angels (2015) and Houston Astros (2013-2014). He batted a combined .194 with 11 home runs and 39 RBI. Over seven minor-league seasons, he has batted .279 with a .378 on-base percentage and 82 home runs.

"Marc is a disciplined hitter who brings left-handed power to our club," Erik Neander, the Rays' vice president of baseball operations, said in a statement. "He's a good fit for our present roster and we expect him to help us against right-handed pitching, primarily at first base."

Franklin, meanwhile, has struggled this year, hitting .139 with one home run and three RBI.

"Nick's oblique injury in spring training interrupted his preparation for the season, and when he returned, our team’s injuries forced him to learn a new position on the fly," Neander said in a statement. "He's young and talented and a big part of our future. Our goal is to make sure he is able to continue developing and get back on track, and we believe consistent playing time is the best way to achieve that."
