Rangers reach deals with top three picks
The club signed their top three picks in last week's draft. That means the club has either signed or agreed to terms with nine of their top 10 picks and 18 of the top 41.
First-round picks Alex "Chi-Chi" Gonzalez and Travis Demeritte were both at Rangers Ballpark Monday along with second-round selection Akeem Bostick. Gonzalez, a right-hander from Oral Roberts, will head to Spokane tomorrow to begin his pro career.
Demeritte, a shortstop from Winder-Barrow High School in Georgia, and Bostick, a right-hander from West Florence High School in South Carolina, are headed to Arizona.
Gonzalez, the 23rd pick, got a signing bonus of $2.215 million. Demeritte, the 30th pick, received a bonus of $1.9 million and Bostick got $520,600.
The club doesn't feel the draft could have gone any better.
"In the preparations leading up to the draft, we really have thousands of different scenarios that play out," said A.J. Preller, the team's senior director of player personnel. "For us as a scouting staff, we try to prepare for the best and the worst. Definitely in the few weeks leading up the draft this was about as good as a scenario as we felt like we could have."
