Rangers make several minor moves
The Texas Rangers made several transactions Thursday morning in Nashville but not of them involved the names Hamilton, Greinke, Young or Upton.
Texas made a pick in the Rule 5 draft, selecting right-handed sidearmer Coty Woods from Colorado in the major-league phase of the draft. The Rangers also picked up infielder Marquez Smith from Cincinnati in the Triple-A phase of the Rule 5 draft.
The Rangers lost two players in the draft as well, as third baseman/catcher Tommy Mendonca was picked by Oakland and first baseman Chris McGuiness was snagged by Cleveland.
The Rangers also signed four players to minor-league deals with invites to spring training. The biggest name in the four is right-hander Evan Meek, who was an All-Star for Pittsburgh in 2008. He spent most of last year in Triple A.
Right-hander Jake Brigham, who was part of the initial Geovany Soto trade with the Chicago Cubs in July, was also re-signed to a minor-league deal along with first baseman/designated hitter Brandon Allen and right-hander Randy Wells. Wells has 28 wins in the majors between Toronto and the Cubs.
Texas also completed the trade with San Diego that brought right-hander Cory Burns to Texas by sending right-hander Wilfredo Boscan to San Diego. Boscan went 7-5 at Frisco last season.
