Rangers' Jurickson Profar suffers another setback to shoulder
One of the reasons the Texas Rangers traded Ian Kinsler in the offseason to Detroit for Prince Fielder was to free up a starting role at second base for Jurickson Profar.
Profar, who has been on the disabled list all season with the strained muscle under his arm pit, hurt himself again earlier this week and told the team it could have happened when he rolled over the wrong way while sleeping.
Team doctor Keith Meister diagnosed Profar with a Grade 2 strain of the muscle.
Texas general manager Jon Daniels said Profar has been shut down and there is no timetable on his return, but he'll be sidelined at least another eight to 12 weeks.
"We're going to take this one extremely conservatively and extremely slowly," Daniels said.
Profar's injury, which he first felt in spring training, will not require surgery. He had begun hitting in extended spring training games in Arizona, but was limited to designated-hitting duties. He had not resumed throwing to bases.
In Profar's absence at second base, the club had journeyman Josh Wilson as the Opening Day second baseman. He was seeing action along with Donnie Murphy, who is currently on the disabled list and rehabbing at Triple-A. The club is now using the rookie duo of Rougned Odor and Luis Sardinas at second base. Neither had played above Double-A before their promotions this season.
