Rachel Alexandra has a procedure
Rachel Alexandra continues to make a ''remarkable'' recovery despite undergoing a surgical procedure to drain an abscess discovered Thursday morning.
She remains bright with a good appetite after the standing procedure to drain the abscess adjacent to her reproductive tract and rectum. Veterinarians at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital said the development wasn't uncommon but noted that Rachel Alexandra's vital signs were normal during the surgery and she was able to graze later in the day.
The 2009 Horse of the Year underwent surgery on Feb. 13 to remove a section of small section damaged during foaling. Rachel Alexandra has made steady progress including walking and eating, but veterinarians said that she still faces ''a long road'' in her recovery.
