It took five overtimes and nearly six hours, but Quinnipiac managed to beat Union College 3-2 early Saturday in the longest hockey game in college history.

Greg Holt of the Bobcats scored with 10:22 remaining in the fifth overtime to give Quinnipiac the win in the opener of the ECAC best-of-three quarterfinal series, which continues Saturday night.

At 150 minutes and 22 seconds, it was the longest game in college hockey history and concluded at 1:03 a.m. The previous record was set in 2006, when Yale beat Union College 3-2 in a game that was 141:35 long.

Union scored two goals in the first period, while Quinnipiac scored a goal each in the first and second periods.

"It's disappointing, very disappointing," Union senior forward Mario Valery-Trabucco told The Times Union in Albany. "But, we just can't dwell on it for too long. We have another game to play."

Union set a school record for shots on goal 75 but Bobcats goalie Dan Clarke made 73 saves.

"From a competitive standpoint, my guys really wanted it," Quinnipiac coach Rand Pecknold said. "This is new territory for us. We will see what happens. It's one thing to win in one overtime, it's quite another to win in five."
