Quick Hits: Braves at Tigers 3.30.15
Early News: The Tigers made eight roster cuts on Monday morning, including outfielder Tyler Collins and catcher Bryan Holaday.
It's also clear, because Shane Greene will be on the mound instead, that Justin Verlander won't make his scheduled start on Thursday.
Tom Gage: With Collins, it just came down to a player with options remaining getting sent out so that players without options (Andrew Romine and Hernan Perez) get saved, didn't it?
Dana Wakiji: That had a lot to do with it. Plus, with Anthony Gose, Rajai Davis, J.D. Martinez and Yoenis Cespedes, Collins would not be getting much playing time, which they feel would hinder his development.
TG: And with Holaday, what was the reasoning there?
DW -- Brad Ausmus feels that James McCann makes them a better team, although he also said it would surprise him if they did not need Holaday at some point this season.
McCann has a good combination of offense and defense and they want to see it at the major-league level.
TG -- You're not surprised about Verlander, are you? When you are "still a little tight," as he was over the weekend, it's best to be cautious.
DW -- The way the schedule works with an off day here and there, they can push him back to the Cleveland series (the first road series) without him actually missing a regular-season start.
As they always say, they're more interested in having players for the long haul rather than the short term.
