BRISBANE, Australia (AP) The Queensland Reds have signed 111-test Wallaby veteran George Smith to a two-year Super Rugby deal.

The Reds said Friday that the 35-year-old Smith will join the Reds for the 2017 and 2018 seasons, while also playing for Suntory in Japan's Top League.

Smith is a replacement for departing openside flanker Liam Gill, who will play for French club Toulon at the end of the season.

Smith has not played in Super Rugby since he left the ACT Brumbies in 2013, the same year in which his international career ended. Since, he has performed strongly in European rugby for Lyon and Wasps, where he was recently named the club's player of the year.

He also assisted head coach Eddie Jones as a breakdown coach during England's successful Six Nations campaign.
