Pro tennis returns for Goldwater Classic

PHOENIX -- Women's professional tennis returns to Phoenix with the United States Women's Tennis Associations Goldwater Women's Tennis Classic, Nov. 4-11 at Phoenix Country Club.

The final U.S. event on the 2012 professional calendar represents the final chance for 60 pros to earn points to qualify for January's Australian Open.

The top-ranked player in the field is 20-year-old Camila Giorgi of Italy, currently ranked 80th in the world. Sesil Karatantcheva, ranked 87th, of Kazakhstan is the defending champion.

The top U.S. entries include 19-year-old Lauren Davis (ranked 90th), 21-year-old Melanie Oudin (98) and veterans Jill Craybas (165) and Bethanie Mattek-Sands (169).

The tournament offers $75,000 in prize money benefits Elevate Phoenix, a charitable organization dedicated to mentoring urban youth in the Phoenix area.
