The Dallas Cowboys cut a declining former Pro Bowl wide receiver on Wednesday and the Carolina Panthers did the same on Thursday.

A day after Miles Austin was released, five-time Pro Bowler Steve Smith was shown the door in Carolina. What makes Smith's departure interesting to the Cowboys is that before he was cut, the Panthers tried to accommodate him with a trade.

According to Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer, the Cowboys were one of the five teams on Smith's list of desired destinations.

If he remained on Carolina's roster, the 34-year-old would have been a $7 million cap hit for the Panthers. Like Austin, he was designated a post-June 1 cut, making him an unrestricted free agent.

New England, Baltimore, Tampa Bay and San Diego were the other teams Smith included as possible trade destinations.

Smith, who has seven 1,000-yard seasons, started 15 games in 2013, hauling in 64 passes for 745 yards and four touchdowns. He made his most recent Pro Bowl appearance in 2011 after catching 79 passes for 1,394 yards and seven touchdowns.

With the Cowboys salary cap situation and need to fix a historically bad defense, it seems that they would be the least likely destination of the five that Smith presented to the Panthers front office.
