Preview the opposition: Seattle Mariners

An MRI taken on the right knee of catcher Adam Moore contained some bad news for the Mariners on Thursday.

Moore suffered a torn meniscus while playing defense Wednesday in Texas, and he will need surgery.

As the Mariners only have one other catcher, Miguel Olivo, on the 40-man roster, Seattle will have to make a move before Friday's home opener against the Indians.

The Mariners have a couple of veteran catchers at Class AAA Tacoma, Josh Bard and Chris Gimenez, who could fill in. The announcement of a replacement should be made Friday, and Bard, who spent time with Seattle last year, is thought to be the likely candidate to be promoted.

To add either catcher, the Mariners will have to clear a space on the 40-man roster. If Moore is going to be out six weeks or more, it's likely that he will be put on the 60-day disabled list, at which point he wouldn't be counted against the 40-man limit.

Surgery for Moore has yet to be scheduled, but he's likely to be out a minimum of four weeks and likely closer to eight weeks.

NOTES, QUOTES

--C Adam Moore had an MRI on his right knee Thursday, and it was discovered that he needs surgery to repair a torn meniscus. The surgery hasn't been scheduled, but Moore is likely to be out a month or two.

--C Josh Bard and C Chris Gimenez both were scheduled to start the season at Class AAA Tacoma. However, with the injury to C Adam Moore (torn meniscus), one of the two likely will be promoted to the big-league team Friday.
